Anna Hazare and the Church

This is a guest post by Blessen Varghese, an ex-journalist of The Times of India, who is now working as a content editor with an IT firm in Mumbai. Blessen is passionate about working for the Lord among the youth and alongside his father who is in the ministry. He also writes a Christian blog: Oasis. He is on Twitter as @blessenvargs
‘I am Anna’ Gandhi caps are in! They’re crying “revolution” everywhere. Many have tagged this as “the second freedom struggle”. The tag may seem over the top, but no one can deny the fact that a certain Anna Hazare from a remote village in Maharashtra has managed to stir up the entire nation of India like no other leader has post-independence!

Even as we were driving to the hall for the final session of what had been three powerful and Spirit-filled days, one could not help but notice the check-posts put up by the police at some junctions across the roads in Mumbai.

My friend revealed to me that the reason behind this unusual presence of police across the road on a Sunday was Anna Hazare himself. His call for country-wide protest against corruption and to bring about a strong Anti Corruption Bill (Lokpal Bill) had resulted in thousands (and at certain places, lakhs) – most of them youngsters – coming out to the streets shouting slogans and asking people to be a part of the movement.

It captured headlines in the media and became the most talked-about topic on social media networks. Popular grounds and public places across the country saw myriads of people who wanted to see change in the country’s way of handling corruption.

Coming from a journalism background, I’ve been following the Anna-campaign closely that has now moved onto its second phase: pressurising the government to accept the ‘Jan Lokpal’ (civil society’s version of the Lokpal Bill). As we sat in that final session, one couldn’t help but think hard when Bro. Shyju drew parallels to Anna’s campaign and the current church.

Are there any parallels between Anna’s campaign and the current church? Here are a few points that we, as Christians, should ponder upon:

  • When there are revolutions taking place across the length and breadth for a justice-filled, corruption-free India, what about the Church? Why is the Church silent when she knows the real King of Justice?
  • It is NOT Anna Hazare who can cleanse India entirely. It is JESUS, the King of kings – on whom there was no charge; on whom there was no sin; who did not get corrupted by the world – who can free this great nation and the world of its stains.
  • It is NOT the Jan Lokpal Bill which can free India of its real dirt! It is the WORD of GOD that can lead this nation to a spotless path.
  • It is NOT  Civil Society and the protestors, who can make India fully free of corruption! It is the Church – the body of CHRIST – you and me – believers not corrupted by the world – through the power of the Word of God that can bring freedom and fairness to the country.
  • Should it not have been the fasting and praying of the Church that turns the nation’s attention towards the ONLY solution?
As “wake-up” calls echo across India, I think it’s high-time the church wakes up to The Call. It’s time for the Body of Christ to unite, get to their knees and start praying for the true King of Justice to be revealed to our nation! Wake up Church to wake India up!

“Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.”
  Ps 24: 9
How is your church responding to the Anna Hazare situation? Should we as Christians join the protest? What is your stand on all this? Discuss below.
  • Bernadine Wicket

Truly this is a wake up call.  In fact right from the time this started the Body of Christ all over India should have been on its knees to pray for the nation.  This should not only be a one-time crisis fasting and prayer but a part of an individual’s daily  personal prayer.

What immense joy it would bring to the King of Justice, as referred to by Blessen, if each Christian in India spent just 10 minutes as part of daily prayer to pray for India and those in authority and for the shackles and chains to be broken and for the strongholds to bow down to the name of Jesus.

If we have not done this before, let us be challenged to wake up!!!

    • Blessen Varghese

Amen to that! I think it’s never too late though for the church of wake up! And I totally agree, it’s not a one-time thing! We’ve been placed in this lovely country for a purpose!

    • Blessen Varghese

Amen to that! I think it’s never too late though for the church of wake up! And I totally agree, it’s not a one-time thing! We’ve been placed in this lovely country for a purpose!

I completely agree to every word…. We need Anna Hazares in church  … who are equally passionate for the body of Christ and cannot stand any prejudice and sleaze…
The Body of Christ has learnt a cheap technique of worshiping god for materialistic blessing and the Prosperity Theory is the so called parasite that’s ruining the churches.
Rev 7:9-17 talks about a great multitude that are defined as the ones who have come out of the great tribulation and whose tears will be wiped away by God himself. Unfortunately many of us don’t want to wait till then.
I pray that a generation arise that love the God knowing what HE is all about and because what he can do.
    Shalom!

Lincy, it’s more like we need more Lincys and Blessens in Church than Hazares! Indeed, we need a generation that would love GOD regardless of what/who/where they are! And I believe, we ARE that generation who would fight against every ‘corrupttion’ and ‘sleaze’ within and outside the Church!

      GOD bless.

What is recommendable about the Team Anna is the team coordination. Even though they are spread across India and even abroad, yet there is good coordination between all of them. The basic principles of non-violence and gathering at various places is an example of their team work. They flash messages to all the people in the system at their own expenses just because the believe in what they do and are passionate about it.

They do not have someone like me have the Holy Spirit to guide us at every step. They use electronic media but we have a God Who talks to us directly and also makes things easy for us. We should learn from them when people are completely passionate about what they do then there is total harmony among the ranks which we do not see among the Churches even though we have not a man but God at our head Who has done far, far, far, greater sacrifice then Mr. Anna Hazare…

Esthers, Joshuas, Jospehs it is time for you to be nominated to be elected  not protest,  but represent your King and Saviour , how to lead with the wisdom of Jesus.

There is no need to protest, but represent the One Saviour in any way you can, not just in fasting and prayer, or in a blog, but to be ready to lead like Joshua or Joseph when the call is on you..

For the leaders in the making including the author of this article,
You show that you are a letter  from Christ, …
written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,
          not on
tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Jesus Christ is the only hope for every heart, and every nation.  He created them all.

    Jesus loves India.

      Amen!

  • Vijayrs777

Its soo Gud n true dat church should pray n lead a lyf of Righteous as we made righteous by the blood of CHRIST JESUS and Let the GLORY of RIGHTEOUS GOD should reveal in the nation INDIA AMEN

Yes I do agree..that it is high time for the wake up call for the Bride of Christ..our weapons are not carnal…when they gather together for a common goal or purpose ..yes there is power and strength but there is more power and strength given to us from above by our most loving Father as individuals.. as a committed Christian with the Power from above, you have the power to  influence this world even control its affairs from your prayer closet . BUT ON ONE CONDITION EVERYTHING TO BE DONE  ACCORDING TO HIS WORD- OUR PURPOSE MUST BE  “LET YOUR KINGDOM COME. LET YOUR WILL  BE DONE ON EARTH (INDIA OR ANY OTHER NATION) AS IT IS IN HEAVEN” We shall pray for India, shall proclaim to ‘her’ that her TRUE FREEDOM is there and it is free, no blood shed is needed because someone(JESUS ) has already shed it….  Yes you Brothers in Christ who shared this blog.  I am proud of you pray that as the days are coming closer and closer let your voices be raised and be heard with the message of THE KING OF KINGS WHO IS COMING SOON and invade the media with life giving WORDS of THE KING.

    • Blessen Varghese

Agree! Some of us, with the life-giving message of the gospel can be ‘influencers’ who can proclaim and show CHRIST to our country!

      God bless!

In reading this, I was reminded of how the Bible refers to corruption as bondage in Romans 8:21. It is only Jesus who can deliver the nations – and all creation – “from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.”

The children of God do have the answer: it is only Jesus who can set the captive free. It is time to break the silence!

Feel challenged by this post. God bless you!

    • Blessen Varghese

Absolutely! We do have The Answer, but it’s time we also proclaim THE ANSWER to the outside world. Through our lives, through our words, through our deeds, etc!

  • Deborah

Bro Shyju….Here is my view…Most Indians wished to break this corruption but none raised a clear voice about this..When Anna Hazare raised his voice, people joined hands with him to raise their voice too…it is all a matter a “Who first starts it…?”….
Only prayer can get deliverance for India from the bondage of corruption….I wish we plan for a nationwide “Fast and Prayer”..”All night prayers…”..and all chains of prayer, pleeding to God to move HIS hands over our nation and deliver us from this Bondage…All christian churches and organisations should join hands for this act…but once we start I thin every one will join,…..

So “WHO WILL START THIS FIRST..?”  Faith without action – doesn’t have any value in it…

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com Shyju Mathew

Good point to be noted sis. We have started a prayer time once a month in Bangalore, we hope that the Lord will rise more people. Thanks for the share sis.

  • Admatha

awesum! thats true we’ve got to stand togather nd start our prayers for our KING to cleanse our nation…..

  • Ashish

dear shyju. i do not agree the way u see the whole issue. church should engage in such protests, but the point is this what do we mean by church. in a nation where Christians are almost 2% with less credibility among the people, can we stay away at this high time of historical changes in our country. this 2 % Christians are divided  in innumerable denominations which itself is a failure for us in such a country like ours. if u r a follower of the king of justice, then not only u but the whole church unitedly reflect the concern before people. if church want to remain silent, then why it opened it mouth only when persecution comes, then why u need political support. god of the old testament was searching people who seek justice, but alas nobody found. now let the church rose and not kept mum. they sholud show that church is the sign of the coming kingdom of god.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com Shyju Mathew

Dear Ashish thanks for commenting however pls go thru the post again. Blesson did not discuss about protesting or not protesting. The post is not for or against anybody. In fact this is a call for the Church to rise up. Agree with ur perspective on we standing united. Hope that helps. Thanks.
