Here is an excerpt from a recent Times of India news article:

US Ambassador to China - Backpack Coffee Starbucks

A recent photograph of Gary F. Locke, the new United States ambassador to China, buying coffee with his 6-year old daughter and carrying a black backpack at a Starbucks in the Seattle airport has gone viral on the Chinese Internet. The seemingly banal scene has bewildered and disarmed Chinese because they are used to seeing their own officials indulge in privileged lives often propped up by graft and bribery and lavish expense accounts.

“To most Chinese people, the scene was so unusual it almost defied belief,” Chen Wei-hua, an editor at China Daily, wrote. Cheng Li, a scholar at the Brookings Institution who studies Chinese elite politics, said in an e-mail, “Ambassador Locke’s photo contrasts sharply with the image of the Chinese officials who often live in a secret, insulated, very privileged fashion. This may explain why some Chinese leaders tend to be out of touch with the real life of the ordinary Chinese people – members of the urban middle class, not to mention the farmers and migrant workers.”

What Ambassadors of Christ Can Learn?

Reading this news made me realize that it is a wonderful lesson that the ambassadors of Jesus can learn from the U.S. ambassador. Now I’m not implying that elderly servants of God must carry their own heavy bags, but certainly, this article is a reminder to all of us who serve the Lord that we are not celebrities, but servants who are in service to the Lord and His people.

We should be careful not to abuse the love and honor that people endow on us or misuse it our own selfish purposes. In fact, the people are the VIPs and Jesus is the only Hero of Christianity. Servants of God exist because of the needs of His people, and we are carriers of the message of our Master. Remove the Master and the people from the picture and we are just like the donkey that people throw stones at. God deserves all the credit for choosing us and it is not by our merit, but by His grace. He does this so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

Have a look at the Scriptures below:

Col 3:12Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience…”

Phil 2:3-8  “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,  who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,  but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.  And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Yes, there may be times when you genuinely need people’s assistance and there will also be times when no matter how humble you are, people will misunderstand you! Things will not be in your control at all times, but let us always remember that God loves a humble heart. We should strive towards transparency and humility so that the fruits of our ministry are not mingled with shame or hypocrisy.

Growing up, I always heard my mom say, “The more the Lord lifts you up, you should all the more humble yourself before Him.” It is easy to be humble when we are ‘small’ but the real challenge is when we grow to be of ‘greater significance’ – as in the case of the U.S. ambassador- that’s where we must display true humility.

The church of Christ survives and thrives through servanthood. And this is not just for leaders! Let us not forget that every child of Jesus is gifted to serve the body of Christ in his or her own unique way for His glory.

What I would like to share is that I have recently had a dream with Jesus talking to me. What impressed me beyond words in this dream was His very genuine humility. H took my hand and drew me to Himself to talk to me. His hand was tough like the hand of a construction worker would be. I realized that He is a humble worker in the field of the world, not afraid to get down and get dirty so-to-speak in order to help people. As He held my hand, I got so overwhelmed by who He was that I exploded in explosive worship, I was almost besides myself in praising Him.

But even though He was getting so much praise from me, He did not react in the false humility that says: Oh, who me, no, I am only a worm that I sometimes seen people put on, He was genuinely receiving the praise but not focus on it, BECAUSE His whole focus was on me. I realized from that dream that the key to humility is on been others focused, not self-absorbed. He was grateful for the praise and received it gracefully, but that was not His focus.

He was basically saying from His body language something like this: Thank you for the praise, I appreciate that, but really the reason I am here is not for this, I am here for you, to talk about you and to focus on you. That touched my heart beyond words … He was actually treating me with respect and dignity that almost made me uncomfortable because it was too much for me for the Son of God to treat me like this. Even though the words He told me were fantastic for me, they were totally overshadowed by who He was. And that’s what humility would do, you remember the person, and how they treated you, more than their sermon …

After reading this amazing comment I forget what I was going to write myself!

      JESUS IS SO AWESOME…

I did not want to say too much in the first comment and I left a few things out cause this is just a comment, not a sermon, but at the beginning of the dream, He displayed humility in another way to me. He was sitting with His arm around another man’s shoulder and they were talking away about all sorts of things, even simple things of life that that man was interested in, with a lot of ease and very relaxed, their conversation was flowing soo naturally. While watching I began to crave the same thing from Him myself and I was asking in my heart if He will talk to me as well as I was a few meters away. That’s when I saw His eyes starring at me, the man dissapeared and it was just me and Jesus.

He actually came to tell me that He was very pleased with me and very happy with what I do. And that was again a surprise for me, since my husband was in India, I was running his business in his absence, looking after the house and 2 kids and ministering to a few people, I did not feel like I was ‘achieving’ a lot or doing something very special. Even my house needed a good clean then because I took some time to write some articles and did not get to it and I felt condemned. Somehow that made me realize that our natural priorities do not always fit with His. He was happy with me, because I tried to encourage a depressed sister, while putting myself and the house work behind for a bit or writing things to encourage someone. I had others in the church who would have judged me severely if they saw my house the same day Jesus came to me in the dream, but Jesus knew I put people above things and others above myself, and that’s what He appreciated. He was so much kinder and sweeter and peaceful than I knew, I thought I knew Him, but I was dumbfounded when I saw Him ….

Marilena, your story matches mine exactly just that my kids have grown up now..but ditto everything including my house which needs a clean up…remember the story of Mary housework can wait but others come first…even I tried to encourage a depressed sister but sometimes we do not suceed much but we sow a seed someone will water. Also I needed to write a diary with breakthroughs experienced but did not get to it..both of us settled in the same country..how awesome can that get. I also run a business together with my husband but when he is not there I manage it in his absence. Is this God talking to me just because he came into your dream to give me a message to tell me it is OK  the way I do things..I put people above all things just like you so that I can one day tell them about Jesus..thanks for sharing

First of all blessed by the post and then was really swept off my feet when I read the encounter that Marilena had with the Lord.

I am sure the Lord in all His glory and majesty appreciates even the tiniest thing we do whether it be around the house, managing kids, running a business, ministering to someone in need.

A lot of the Arabs that I worked for several years, although they were in the designations of CEOs, COOs, Chairman or members of the Board were really humble and always replied to smses sent to them whichever part of the globe they were in.

    Blessed by this post.

Like both  the scriptural references here, especially Phil 2:3-8 to follow Jesus example on humility.

Thanks also to the dream shared by Marilena.

I wish I could have Marilena’s experience..It is a learning process for all of us…I have encountered humility in Sydney generally with majority as this is a place where there is dignity of labour..so the head of any department is usually humble even to the extend of wishing good morning to lowest paid job worker.  Also a CEO of an organisation carries his own bag and has direct access to the public.   That culture is then imbibed into new people coming into the country just goes to show the root is healthy everything thrives with good fruit.  The culture of an organisation starts with the head of the department.
Please do not publish this if not relevant. Thanks

I lived in Sydney, Melbourne and now I am in Brisbane and there is a real spirit of humility here. You can go to a party and there will be a multi millionaire there, and he will be in shorts and t-shirts, not the expensive kinds either, very simple and relaxed and he will not talk much about his own achievements, it will casually just happen to come to the surface and he doesn’t puff up when he talks about it. He feels equal to anyone. I know many rich people here and they are all like that, they never have a pretentious attitude. The former PM of the country when the floods came to Brisbane was in shorts digging mud up for people and cleaning up the mess with everyone. Very inspiring.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart
