One of the most asked questions, from the time I’ve been blogging, is, “How do we know what the will of God for our life is?” I’m glad we are able to do this together without anymore delay.

When there are no specific direction on whom you should marry or which car you should buy and how and where you should plan your business, what do you do? How do you know what is the course of action to follow?

I’d like to start by explaining the two kinds of the Will of God. God used Johnathan Edwards, a pastor and a profound theologian in New England in the early 1700s to discover these truths. For a comparatively simpler read, try and get the book ‘Desiring God,’ a book by John Piper where he clearly explains these magnificent truths in detail. (If you are interested, you can download the PDF of the same at the bottom of this post)

The Sovereign Will of God

There are instances that occur under God’s sovereign plans like the crucifixion of Jesus. Even though crucifying Jesus was an act of sin, it was predestined by God. In Acts 4: 27-28, it says “for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.”  Also seen in the fact that the Lamb of God was slain before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8)

Another example is God allowing persecution. In 1 Peter 3:17, Peter talks about suffering for doing good, if that should be God’s will. Another verse to explain this is, “He does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’” Daniel 4:35.

The sovereign Will of God is in control of all things. It cannot be cancelled and it will come to pass.

The Will of God’s Commandment

Jesus said in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven“. This will of God is based on the obedience of the Word of God.

And throughout the Bible you will see God’s giving specific commandment to His children. Examples: Loving your neighbour as yourself – Mark 12:33, Loving God with all your heart, soul and mindMatthew 22:37, Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you1 Thessalonians 5:18. In another verse, 1 Thessalonians 4:3, “This is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality.”

Thankful hearts, rejoicing in God, holiness, fleeing from sin, purity, etc. are God’s commanded will for us. And unlike the sovereign will of God, which cannot be broken, not many obey the will of God’s command.

God’s Sovereign Will must always come to pass whether we believe in it or not. His Will of Command can be broken and sadly, it is broken every day. The Bible says that as long as we love Him and are called according to His purpose, he turns all things for our good (Romans 8:28). This is the reason why we as His children and disciples have hope in our sufferings.

How Do We Really Know His Will?

That being said, how do we know specifically what exactly is the will of God in each situation?

One of the most powerful scriptures in the Bible and a clear direction to our questions is found in Romans 12:2. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

The first thing Apostle Paul talks about in this verse is that we need to have a renewed mind to understand the things of God. For this you have to test it in line to the Word of God. The Word of God is the supreme authority for every work. (2 Timothy 3:16) The verse also implies that when you are renewed in your mind and in line with the word of God, you will discern what the will of God is in a particular situation.

We get many emails to our ministry asking for specific prophetic word on whether to get married to a particular person or not. Whether God can reveal it? Yes, God can. However, we need not pursue prophets for knowing the future but the scripture calls us to be transformed by the renewal of our mind.

Bible Application

The word of God, the Bible, is the revealed will of God. Sadly, in today’s Christian culture, we have too many people listening to too many voices. I want to strongly make this statement that, “There are no prophets (or prophetesses), prophecies, visions or dreams that is above the Word of God.”

No matter how anointed you are, no matter how audible the voice you heard, you cannot go against the Word of God. The Lord desires that we be transformed by the Word of God and not by voices we hear around us. This happens when we as children of God devote ourselves to reading, loving and mediating on the Word of God. Hebrews 5:14

Start by understanding that you cannot do it on your own and that you need the Holy Spirit that will lead you through the Scriptures. Through that time of soaking yourself in God your actions and thoughts will be in line with the plan and will of God for your life.

To answer your question Shy, I would say YES, but then again every time I enter into a new level in Christ, I realize that there’s a greater level of “trust” that He requires from me that I didn’t even know I could have given to Him. The same goes for the word “SURRENDER”. But thank God He’s such a good and patient teacher!

    Blessings!

Priyanka, when u say u prayed and didnt get answer, seems like u r waiting for a voice.. instead, cont to seek God, give ur ways into His hands… expect the Lord to lead you… be open to hearing from him…trust Him to shut the doors that are not from him.. base yourself on the word of God, walk in HIs ways with all ur heart. Every day of your life is planned by God.. believe that and move on in faith. Prayers for you.

i hv a question. Y is it tht God gives SOME people dreams, visions, and speaks to them but not others? Sometimes,i feel like God loves others more than me cuz He speaks to them clearly and not me :(

    • Anonymous

Not necessary that you have to see dreams for God to clearly speak and not all dreams mean that they are God speaking. But try praying and asking God to give you dreams and interpretation of the same. I’m sure the Lord will bless you with the same in due time!

I believe that the most important conditions to be met for hearing God (and not be deceived) are : 1. humility – ‘The pride of your heart has deceived you’ (Obadiah 1:3) – deception comes from pride in our heart. 2. Total surrender of our plans – like laying down on God’s altar YOUR plans, agendas, wants, desires and ideas before asking God what His will is. I have found that any time I did not lay them all down, even one desire left alive was enough to make you hear wrong.

I cannot recommend more the book called Ruined for the Ordinary by Joy Dawson (from Youth with a Mission) on how to hear God’s voice – is the best ever teaching I have ever read on the subject, very detailed and specific, giving examples in many different circumstances. Shyju, if you want help to get a copy, let me know and I can help you. The YWAM base in Bangalore might have it.

Dear Benny, it is simple. As we mature in GOD. God expects us to take decisions out of that spirituL maturity as our minds are renewed daily to think and feel like His. Reading your situation, I’m more than sure that the Lord won’t mind and would want to bless you with a car. Yes go for a loan only if your job can afford it and there are plenty of affordable cars today. Your wife’s pregnancy is sure top priority. God bless you with wonderful children, blessings.

    • Benny

Dear Shyju brother, Thank you very much for your reply. Will you please pray for our this necessity, ie, car and above all for a healthy baby? (Sorry for using this section for placing a prayer request). Benny and Manju from Mumbai.

Liked the post. Though my doubt about who is the right person to marry still remains. The only command I have come across in Bible is that do not yolk with an unbeliever. And 2nd in Amos 3- How can 2 walk together if not agreed? Even when I have followed these commands, the doubt still remains..is he the right person for me?is he chosen for me by god? Plz do help..:-)

  • Marilena

    Hi Shyju,

One question I still have not worked out and would like to ask your opinion is this. Many who are evangelists and even did great things for God, they have started movements, etc, say that Why do you need a voice when you have a verse? In regards to commands like: Go in all the world and preach the Gospel. So they just went, not waiting for a voice, purely on that command, and did great exploits for God. Others who also did great things for God say that: You can’t just go overseas with a family without hearing a specific word from God, it affects your kids, etc, major life change, you have to hear God specifically. They say that if it was not initiated by God and it is your own decision then your kids will suffer, you will suffer, etc, etc. Well, even when you know that you know that you are in the will of God you suffer, so how do you know then the difference? Suffering just comes together with serving God. So, which of the 2 are correct? This has confused me and I need God’s wisdom as we need to make the same major decision to move countries with kids and all.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

Personally I’d say it’s a balance of both. It greatly depends on ur faith level. In NT web though the prophet said this owner of the belt will be bound, Paul still went ahead on his trip. In NT ur faith level is very important. And if ur action of faith is aligned with the Word of God then it is bound to being results. There have been many scary prophecies of death, doom & destruction over my life. My question to those prophecies is, obviously the enemy fights those who r in the war with him & that does not mean I refrain. Now if there is a specific reason y God don’t want me to go to a place then he will bring that restlessness in my Spirit as long as I am walking in the Spirit. Being led by the Spirit counts. I don’t pay attention to prophecies from anybody. Ur heart must have a peace about ( provided u r walking with God.) Now then even if we miss a prophecy. I’m not going to let that scare me. I will truely repent & align with the Lord & expect all things to work together for good anyways no matter how ugly the situation. i choose to believe that there is no power in hell that can touch our family! Ur conviction matters a lot. If there is any ounce of fear then it is best not to take ur kids to those places. Hope this helps.

      • Marilena

        Thanks for your reply Shyju,

I didn’t mean listening to prophecies, I meant hearing yourself from God. Do you wait to hear something yourself or do you just go based on the Word command alone and go without a specific confirmation from God? I am not afraid of consequences that come from obeying God, because God gives us grace for whatever He calls us, I just don’t want to be foolish and suffer unnecessarily, and put my children through that as well.

I know of great man of God who believed in just going – like T L Osborn and William Booth, and others. They did not wait for God to say – you shall go to India, they just went to India, not because they felt God was leading there, but simply because it was a part of the world that needed to hear about Jesus. But many pastors would say: What is God saying? Did He tell you to go? This is what I am speaking about.

Isn’t our faith connected with obedience to the voice of the Holy Spirit – like a Rhema word – or we just have faith based on the Logos?

        • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

Both actually works. God honors being guided by His word & God honors obedience to His voice. When the clarity of His voice is in doubt then go with His Word.
And previous reply on conviction counts. God is moved by faith. When moving in faith always ask the Lord to shut the doors that’s not from Him.

          • Marilena

Thanks Shyju, that helps, God told me definitely last night He just doesn’t want to talk to me about my question now, He just wants me to draw closer now, I am sure He will give me a Rhema word when He considers fit. What I love about God is that you can’t ever put Him in a box, He always jumps out and does what He wants to do. While He is predictable in character, He is not when moving in the Spirit, I love this adventure of the unknown and searching for His misteries! It’s worth the wait during the search cause when He does speak, boy, it’s good!

I m a muslim n this is very similar to the verses of Quran, verily Islam is the message of God as was tht which was sent to Jesus may peace be upon him.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

I don’t know about that. But this I know, Jesus loves u & died for u on the cross so that by believing on Him ur sins can be washed & u will have eternal life in heaven.

  • http://www.revivallifestyle.com/ Daniel Vogler

    Great thoughts brother!
I love how you said: “ the scripture calls us to be transformed by the renewal of our mind.”
I discovered that often times we wait for God to speak, when he has already spoken a long time ago. How many times does He have to repeat His promises and truths over our lives to us before we can start believing and acting on them?
Only a renewed mind, aligned with God’s perspective of truth and hope, can see God’s perspective in any circumstance. Prophetic words do help me, because the re-affirm what God has already told me. They never present a brand new idea to me, however.

    Love & Blessings!

God will reveal His will at the right time if we are pursuing Him!!!!!!!

Trusting God means surrendering, resting in Him, entrusted to His sovereign control, believing on His perfect love.

  • Jerrin Thomas

From my personal experience , always be humble , spiritual , faithful , and worship him in every situation .this help u , to maintain the bond with GOD , and time will come all doors closed except one which is HIS WILL.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

      Agree. Based on Romans 8:28

  • Bernadine Wicket

Blessed by the post.  It is good to renew our minds as suggested by the Apostle Paul on a daily basis by the washing of the Word. I believe it will only be then when we will be finely tuned to hearing nothing but the voice of the Lord.  (MY sheep listen to My voice).

Also rightly said: there are no prophets, prophetesses, prophecies or anything that is above the Word of God.

May we all be encouraged by the fact that the Holy Spirit is the best guide and teacher who will guide us through and let our actions and thoughts be in line with the Word of God

  • Chinju Saurabh

Great message..But I would like to ask something,In the beginning of this article you have said that many are concerned about God’s will when it comes to marriage or starting a business.

I understand that above all we got to trust and follow the word of God,but how can you know God’s will on a particular matter, Like if you have a desire to settle somewhere else how would you know God’s will in that ..?

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

That’s the point of this post brother. That it takes the renewal of mind, walking closely with God & aligning yourself to God that reveal the will of God over ur life.
