This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series Anointing

In part 1 of this series, we learnt that the anointing is not for us but for Him, His people and His kingdom to be established on earth. In this post, we’ll dig a little deeper to see what activates anointing.

activating the anointing

But just as His anointing teaches you concerning everything and is true and is no falsehood, so you must abide in (live in, never depart from) Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him], just as [His anointing] has taught you [to do]. (1 John 2:27 AMP)

The above scripture gives the key to activate your anointing.

Yes, God does release His anointing through impartation but the real root of receiving that anointing is to:

  1. Abide in Him (live in, never departing Him, pray without ceasing)
  2. Being rooted in Him, knit to Him (in the Word of God)
  3. Continual obedience (Full obedience, rooted in faith)

Prayer Does Not Increase Your Anointing!

Yet let me clarify, prayer does not increase your anointing. Nope it does not! (Against popular beliefs). Prayer is not a ignition to get the anointing going. Prayer is what increases the intimacy in your relationship with God. And no, neither does it make God love you anymore than how much He loved you on the cross, but prayer helps you to tune into that reality of love.

Prayer cuts you from the noise of the world and tunes you to the voice of the Holy Spirit. In this process of being connected to the vine, the anointing/power of God flows in through us (the branches). Anointing therefore is only a by product of prayer.

Some seem to think that more anointed is to do more impressive things. Simply not how God views it. A simple example to explain this is, if God has anointed a person to reach villages for Jesus, that man praying for months is not going to change him into a mega church preacher. His anointing to fulfill his call and purpose does not change with prayer. Prayer only tunes him to fulfill His primary purpose.

Then How Does the Anointing Increase?

Anointing has been described to work in stages. What I believe is that when a person is anointed by God for the working of miracles, his increase in prayer life does not increase that anointing, but what increases with prayer is his sensitivity to understand God direction, guidance or will for the different situations that he faces. Reading dozens of the chapters of the Bible is not what makes you more anointed, but it increases one’s faith to believe God to function in the anointing God has placed on one’s life.

It has always interested me that God called His disciples Apostles even before they planted any church. What is more interesting is that the Judas that betrayed him was also in the company of those that were called as Apostles. Anointing is God’s calling on one’s life. Not something that can be bought. How we respond to that call is on us.

That means, your anointing is activated from the call you have received and multiplies according to your levels of faith.

Explaining that in Romans 12: 6. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.” (NIV)

So in the first place it clarifies what I said earlier in my previous post– there is nothing you can do to deserve God’s anointing. We have gifts that empower the body of Christ according to the grace given to us. And notice the second part how a man’s gift is proportionate to the faith in God.

Your faith increases by hearing the Word of God, the more you immerse yourself in prayer and faith, the more you are tuned to Him. And the anointing in your life is further activated(to do what you were purposed for) with that faith that is birthed out of the intimacy with God.

Thereby anointing is contagious because faith is contagious. Anointing can be rubbed off, because faith of one man stirs another. So now, go immerse yourself in God and put your faith into action!

Question: Have you come across situations in your life when your acting on faith has triggered the anointing? Share with us below:

Next Thursday, in the last post of this Anointing series, I will be covering aspects like how to balance your faith, whether the anointing can be lost and how not to lose your walk with God. To get it in your inbox here.

Thanks. Not easy trying to clear the lines between striving for anointing & functioning in the call, underlined with prayer & faith. Well at least I tried. :)

Hey! Bro…Blessed by your post :) This is what i Believe correct me if iam wrong …” Everyone in the Body of Christ is CALLED .and Anointed because the Anointed one (Christ) Lives in Me…but we need to activate our anointing through the intimate Relationship with him through Prayer and Word … “Hearing his Voice and Stepping out in Faith….” Here is my Question ?Many Emphasize that Many are called but Few are Chosen …They Constantly ask “DO you have a call over your Life ?? Arent Everyone Called ?? ..Does that mean God in his soverignnly choose people or CHOOSING has some thing to do with how we respond to his call ?

As an anointed one of God, based on my experiences, I see the workings of God and the anointing of God in operation after spending much time in prayer. He will lead, guide and direct me and move mightily in whatever task. I strongly believe that the anointing and prayer goes hand in hand.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

Sure. Because ur faith is activated in much prayer.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

To clarify further. What I mean above is that anointing always has been there but prayer increases our dependency & faith thereby we see more manifestation of the anointing that has always been there.

Perhaps you can add a post on the “cost of the anointing”. The anointing does comes with a price which many needs to know about.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

It’s tricky statement as I don’t think there is cost for the anointing. If u mean living consecrated – then that is not a cost, that’s a privilege.

      • Genither

What I meant is that, I’ve heard many great men and women of God say there is a price to pay for the anointing. That God sometimes takes us through a desert experience. The greater the anointing the greater the price.

        • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

Yes :) I believed that too for a long time. They are not wrong from their perspective. But what I believe is that there is no price you can pay for the anointing. If we are anointed it is because we are chosen by His grace not by our qualifications whatever it may be.

For example. If someone says, I had to leave this relationship to get this anointing and they call that the cost. Then they have already cheapened the cost of the anoiting to a relationship that was not in the first place.
          Isint concescration a basic?

If someone says they had to leave this 6 figure salary job as price for the full time ministry, what they then compare is the anoiting is not as worth as their 6figure salary. Does this make sense?

What about the hours of praying they have invested into? That again is not price – it’s a pleasure. How could they call it a price to be with their beloved?

That is why I am keen that there is no price you can pay for the anoiting. Anointing is His grace, our privilege, and we are as long as there is a need in the generation.

Sister, I hope that helps. Please ask if not. this post is not to impress you with our knowlege but to serve and empower our generation through these posts. I hope this sets us free to enjoy and serve in our call.

          • ElizabethMathew

Oh .. so THAT is what it means … Thank you .. Looks like I got the answer to my question without asking it !! :)

          • Genither

Now that you’ve made it more self explanatory, I do understand and believe your perspective. Albeit God anoints whom He pleases.
Overall your posts are enlightening and empowering. I enjoy reading them. Being a scholar I sometimes probe to keep us profound in Him. Keep up the great work. The Lord is pleased with you. Blessed be His name.

So, anointing is activated by ‘hearing from God’ and stepping out in faith in accordance to what we have heard from God. Did I get it right bro?

    The post was a little deep…. had to read… and re-read a couple of phrases… :)

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

Absolutely. U can be anointed for it but not function in it when fear, sin & faith-lessness cripples u.

  • Anitha

    Hi Bro.Shyju,

Thank you for the blogs, it is really great, i still few questions to you about anointing-
In your blog it says anointing is a calling (pls correct me if i am wrong and explain), in spite of calling and anointing why people fail, we see only a handful of people are known to be anointed not all- why?
Secondly in bible it says “Many are called but few are chosen” what is that?
Thirdly i am still not clear on activating anointing- request you to kindly explain in simple terms please…

    Thanks,
    Anitha

      Dear Sister Anitha,
      1. The anointed fail when they take their eyes off Jesus, moreover not all activate the anointing that’s why not everyone’s anointing manifest.
      2. Jesus said many are called but few are chosen in the context of the wedding feast where the unprepared guest was thrown out, this is in context to salvation and what Shyju mentions in this post is about a ministry calling or appointment.
      3. In simple words the post is about not striving for the anointing but to pursue after the source of anointing!
      Hope that helps.

Sister, I hope Priji answered your other questions. To answer the first question, out of some of the basic pitfalls like sexual temptations, desire for wealth, and touching GOd’s glory, there are many more heart issues. We have covered them in many posts here on GTH. See these two posts that will answer your question, http://shyjumathew.com/blog/2010/06/02/5-reminders-to-finish-well/ and http://shyjumathew.com/blog/2010/11/03/church-scandals-fears/

      • Anitha

Thank you bro Shyju & Priji, for taking time and answering .

        God Bless :)

In my journey with the Lord, I have often discovered that the longer we spend in His presence and are finely tuned to the still small voice, the greater the anointing – a direct proportional relationship.
Sometimes when other mundane things of life start prioritizing, I find I lose the anointing and have to quickly run back to my closet prayer.
As rightly pointed out anointing is a bye product of prayer.
May each of us draw closer and bask in His presence daily to experience that anointing.

    • http://www.shyjumathew.com/blog Shyju Mathew

Let’s wait for the next post on if we do loose the anointing.

Can fearful people be anointed ?
